Meet Antoine, the Sculptor with a Secret in Darkness Rising, only #99cents

Antoine Chevalier harbors a secret.

Darkness RisingBorn a gargoyle shifter in Paris, he wants nothing more than to cultivate his art. His hard work pays off the night he completes his greatest sculpture. But the excitement of his accomplishment doesn’t last.

He’s drawn the eye of the wrong group—a coven of vampires. Antoine wakes into darkness, changed. Shattered. His dream of becoming a renowned sculptor is destroyed.

One question remains—how will he ever survive an eternity of darkness alone?

Darkness Rising is part 0.5 of the Chateau Seductions series by USA Today Bestselling author Lisa Carlisle.

Readers have requested more on the dark and mysterious Antoine. In this short story, Antoine tells his tale, which continues in the series with Dark Velvet. Dark Velvet is written from Savannah’s perspective as a newcomer to an art colony, intrigued by the proprietor.

*5 Star Review* – “Lisa Carlisle does a fabulous job going through parts of Antoine’s life that were never discussed in previous stories. Through Darkness Rising, we learn why Antoine is the compassionate person that he is, and we learned what made him that way.

I loved the struggle for Antoine after he first was turned into a Vampire/Gargoyle hybrid. He could have turned and became a monster, yet, he was able to keep as much of his humanity as he could. That is what makes him so loveable throughout this series.” ~Books and Beyond Fifty Shades

I’m Lisa Carlisle and I write romance, mostly paranormal romance. Something about dark, misunderstood, supernatural characters appeals to me, whether it’s a gargoyle driven to protect others, a vampire struggling against his needs, or a shifter trying to protect her secret. I especially enjoy writing about the struggle when one is attracted to human or another species, against the wishes of their own.

I’ve just released the third part of my paranormal romance series called Chateau Seductions. Dark Stranger, part 3 of the trilogy, brings back characters in the first two books for the big finale so it was very exciting to bring them all back together for the grand finale.

Chateau Seductions is set at an art colony in a castle on a remote island. It’s a tranquil space for artists, writers, and musicians to work–and perhaps find romance. During the Howling Good Hop, Dark Velvet, the first part of the series, is on sale for only 99 cents!

They’re mates? Cameron can’t comprehend or accept such a thing is possible. They’re two different species and their worlds don’t mesh. 5* Review  from Books and Beyond Fifty Shades! – “I have read the first 2 books in this series and could not wait to get my hands on this one; and I was not disappointed. The thing I love most, is that while this is a story about paranormal creatures, you can still relate to the trial and tribulations that they go through. You can relate to how each character is feeling, even though you are nothing like them.”

Book Boyfriends – Hot and Swoon Worthy Line

I like the theme of a hot and swoon worthy line for this week’s Book Boyfriends blog hop. Just about anything Antoine, the dark hero in Dark Velvet, says in his rich French accent sounds swoon worthy in my head.

Here’s the opening scene of Dark Velvet, part one of a trilogy called Chateau Seductions.

Savannah’s fingers traced the cool marble of the god’s muscular back and then the definition in his arm as he drew an arrow to shoot. She pictured Antoine bent over the sculpture, brows furrowed in concentration, losing sense of time as he polished each portion to perfection.

“Do you like this?” A deep voice whispering in her ear startled her.

She jumped at the sound of his voice, bumping back into his hard chest, and he caught her upper arms to steady her. Only one man in the castle spoke in that smooth French accent—the sculptor himself.

“Oh, I’m sorry, Antoine.” She fumbled taking a half step forward, away from him. “I shouldn’t have touched it.”

“No, don’t apologize.” He let go of her arms, but his warm breath tickled her ear.

He took her hand, caressing her palm, which sent tingles up her arm. Her bottom lip quivered as he brought her fingers to rest again on the marble piece. She thanked the gods he remained behind her so he couldn’t witness her nervous reaction, and she bit her lip to halt the tremors. This was not the way for a young protégée to behave in front of her benefactor. He owned the castle, created the art colony here where she was attending on a poetry scholarship—she shouldn’t go gaga simply from his touch. Which was exactly what she was doing.

“It pleases me that you appreciate my work.” Leading her fingers down the figure’s chiseled chest, he leaned in closer and added, “I liked watching you admire it.”

His voice alone sent flames rippling through her. Every nerve in her being lit with awareness in reaction to him. In the months since they’d met, they’d never been alone in such proximity. Weeks of heated looks from afar had inflamed her desire so the slightest touch became intimate, strengthening her need for more.

Sounds of approaching voices indicated this evening’s performance in the chateau would soon begin. Several of the musicians in the art colony had collaborated on orchestral pieces they wanted to play in front of an audience for the first time. As fellow artists in residence, they sought the support of fellow residents.

Antoine kissed her hand like a suitor in a bygone era. “I hope you enjoy the concert, Savannah.”

Her lips parted, opening and closing like a fish while she thought of what to say. When she mustered up the courage to turn and face him, he had already left the room, filling her with both relief and disappointment. Unaware she’d been holding her breath, she exhaled deeply.

Several times over the course of the evening, Savannah caught Antoine’s dark eyes watching her. Her emotions roiled in confusion while the performers played Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The way he held her gaze without blinking made her squirm in the burgundy armchair. The rising tension and resolution from the violin and cello underscored her tumultuous emotions.

She smiled at him briefly and focused on the musicians, aware of how her heartbeat had escalated. When she glanced again at Antoine, he still watched her unabashed, as if unconcerned about what the others would think. He took a sip of Porto, nodded her way, and then returned his attention to the musicians. She sat up straighter and crossed her legs at the ankles, then uncrossed them, and crossed them again.

The attraction was becoming more difficult to ignore. In light of how he breached the physical distance by touching her so earlier, she feared she’d be unable to keep her desires hidden much longer. She’d developed an instant crush since she arrived at the castle three months before. How could she not be—he was a renowned sculptor with a devastating, dark appeal. What was she to him than just another young resident who would be gone in three months, replaced by another.

Was she reading more into the brief exchange than was warranted?

It’s just a look. Only a casual glance my way. Even as she attempted to fool herself, she knew she was full of shit.

New Release: Dark Muse #pnr #romance #gargoyle #excerpt

I have a new release out today. Dark Muse is a paranormal romance, part of the Chateau Seductions series. Each story can be read on its own.

Dark Muse

It takes time before Gina Meiro warms up to people and her shyness is often misunderstood. She hasn’t had to worry about meeting new people at a remote art colony until a new resident arrives—a rock guitarist more suited for a billboard. Her carefree days of painting at the medieval-styled castle on a remote New England island are shattered when she stumbles right into his welcome gathering.

After a falling out with his band, Dante Riani wants nothing more at Les Beaux Arts on DeRoche Island than solitude to work on new songs. When a shy young painter asks to paint him at sunset, he’s tempted by the opportunity to be alone with her.

Gina bit her lip, building up the courage to speak her mind. “Actually, I was thinking something,” she confessed.

“Go on.”

“It may sound weird, and feel free to say no if it is.”

Dante’s eyes widened. “Something kinky?” he teased.

“No,” she swatted his arm. “Nothing like that.”

“How disappointing. So what’s on your mind?”

“I noticed you when I was inside the castle.” She left out the part about how long and how many days she had done this. “The silhouette of you playing guitar against the sunset is a perfect juxtaposition. Dark against light. The color contrast. The musician playing into the sunset. Brilliant.”

“Hmm.” He cocked an eyebrow. “I’m wondering where this is going.”

“Would you mind if I painted you one day?”

A smile crept from the corner of his decadent lips. “You don’t paint people often.”

She raised her chin. “I make exceptions when I see something worth painting.” Was she flirting? Time to shut the hell up. Heat rose in from her chest up to her cheeks. Always one to throw an awkward statement, she added, “Nobody would have to know it was you,” she added. “I’d hide your face.”

“You don’t like my face?” The hint of a smile developed into a full blown smirk.

“No!” She protested. “I do.” Shut up, Gina. You’re making it worse. “I meant for your privacy.”

“So you do like my face?” He grinned.

“I’m a p-painter,” she stammered. “I’m looking at this strictly as an artist not letting an opportunity slip her by.”

“So it’s for art, eh?” His eyes twinkled with amusement.

She nodded. This was a better move than trying to speak.

“I’ll think about it. Had plenty of photo shoots with the band, but never a painting. That’s kind of cool.” He stood up, picked up his guitar, and took a few steps toward the castle. Then he stopped and turned back. “I’d be careful about watching me too closely.”

“Why?” She smiled to match the sassy tone in her voice.

The smirk that had lingered on his face dropped away, replaced by a serious expression. “You might not like what you see.”

Author: Claudia D. Christian
Title: Love Blind
Blurb: 1978. Rio de Janeiro. Josephine made a desperate bargain with a vampire named Julio Alberto. Her life for another. Kept in a gilded cage, will she ever allow herself to truly love her charming captor?

Excerpt

“You did a selfless thing.”

Josephine kept her stare on Susie as agony swelled in her breast, knowing this was the last time she’d ever see her or anything from her old life again. She couldn’t breathe. Blinking rapidly, Josephine managed to sound calm and unmoved. “You think so?”

“Of course.” Julio Alberto waited until Susie went inside the small house before instructing the driver to return to the airport.

“Will Susie get in trouble with the police?”

“Why?”

“Two girls end up…you know…and are last seen with her.”

“She’ll be fine.” He leaned over and whispered, “The driver is like me. You don’t need to speak in code.”

Josephine’s gaze flew to the stranger. She was surprised when he kept his attention on the road.

“Marco works for me, Josephine. He was with us when I met you here, in Rio, and now.”

“Ah.” There was nothing more to say. Josephine leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes.

It’s over.

“No, my little kitty. It’s not over.”

Josephine gasped. Her eyes flew open. It wasn’t a coincidence. He’d been inside her mind from the beginning.

“It’s far from over.” Julio Alberto ran the back of his fingers against her colorless cheek. “I thought your love cheap, easy to buy, and easier to forget. Was I wrong?”

Blackness suffocated her heart. Josephine managed to say through numb lips, “No, you were right. You were right about me all along.”

His warm smile unfurled, washing over Josephine in an attempt to stem the terror clogging her mind.

“We’ll see, my little kitty. We will see.”

* * *

Over twenty years had passed since that fateful night. Josephine quickly learned the men she had called monsters were beings known as vampires. She also learned vampires were but one of many more preternatural species that had been walking the earth since time memorial.

Beauty, supremacy, and material wealth were these creatures birthright. Such powers naturally extended to Halfbloods, like Julio Alberto, which in turn favored their closest companions.

As a result, Josephine had only aged the equivalent of two human days in the following decades. Kept on a steady diet of Julio Alberto’s blood, she would be a young woman for a very, very long time. Meaning Julio Alberto had virtually all the time in the world to divine infinite ways of tormenting Josephine if he so chose.

She shifted, feeling the hard bite of the wooden chair beneath her legs. The ebony scarf kept her blind. The scarlet one kept her wrists immobile. Naked, but not necessarily helpless, she waited for Julio Alberto to speak and proceed with whatever devilry he had planned.

Maybe I finally made him angry enough to end me? It wouldn’t surprise me. Then he could find someone more docile and eager to please. Not a nasty tempered bitch like myself.

Josephine sensed him circling her. Occasionally he’d reach out and touch her hair, mouth, thighs, and the part of her he owned between those open thighs.

“I tell you this is getting aggravating, Josephine. All these years later and you still carry these crazy thoughts around in your head, querida.”

“I can’t help it.”

“Yes, you can. You just choose not to at the moment because it’s easier.”

“It’s not—”

“Hush. Why do you think you’re still here?”

“I don’t know.”

He slapped her sex. “Don’t be tiresome, querida. Remember who you are talking to. We have some variation of this conversation every year on this night. I could set my watch by it. While I am a patient man, even this could wear down a saint’s soul. Let’s try a bit a variety this time. Let’s go for the complete truth, my little kitty.”

Josephine bit back a feral moan. “Tell me what you want me to say, Julio Alberto.”

“Always quick to play the whore, eh?”

She felt him crouch before her. She lifted her head high. “I’m not playing. It’s who I am, baby.”

“Liar. You’re no more whore than I am. You never were a true whore, Josephine, no matter how much you want to think otherwise.” Julio Alberto cupped her knees. “You know what I want from you.”

What is it about paranormal characters that makes them so irresistible? Vampires, shapeshifters, gargoyles–I can’t get enough of them. And when you pair them with a rock setting, I’m hooked. Something about the dark, solitary figure of the paranormal characters and the bad boy/bad girl image of the rock star draws me in.

Paranormal characters and humans meet in an underground goth club–vamps, shifters, gargoyles, and sometimes rock stars!
