“You did a selfless thing.”

Josephine kept her stare on Susie as agony swelled in her breast, knowing this was the last time she’d ever see her or anything from her old life again. She couldn’t breathe. Blinking rapidly, Josephine managed to sound calm and unmoved. “You think so?”

“Of course.” Julio Alberto waited until Susie went inside the small house before instructing the driver to return to the airport.

“Will Susie get in trouble with the police?”

“Why?”

“Two girls end up…you know…and are last seen with her.”

“She’ll be fine.” He leaned over and whispered, “The driver is like me. You don’t need to speak in code.”

Josephine’s gaze flew to the stranger. She was surprised when he kept his attention on the road.

“Marco works for me, Josephine. He was with us when I met you here, in Rio, and now.”

“Ah.” There was nothing more to say. Josephine leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes.

It’s over.

“No, my little kitty. It’s not over.”

Josephine gasped. Her eyes flew open. It wasn’t a coincidence. He’d been inside her mind from the beginning.

“It’s far from over.” Julio Alberto ran the back of his fingers against her colorless cheek. “I thought your love cheap, easy to buy, and easier to forget. Was I wrong?”

Blackness suffocated her heart. Josephine managed to say through numb lips, “No, you were right. You were right about me all along.”

His warm smile unfurled, washing over Josephine in an attempt to stem the terror clogging her mind.

“We’ll see, my little kitty. We will see.”

Over twenty years had passed since that fateful night. Josephine quickly learned the men she had called monsters were beings known as vampires. She also learned vampires were but one of many more preternatural species that had been walking the earth since time memorial.

Beauty, supremacy, and material wealth were these creatures birthright. Such powers naturally extended to Halfbloods, like Julio Alberto, which in turn favored their closest companions.

As a result, Josephine had only aged the equivalent of two human days in the following decades. Kept on a steady diet of Julio Alberto’s blood, she would be a young woman for a very, very long time. Meaning Julio Alberto had virtually all the time in the world to divine infinite ways of tormenting Josephine if he so chose.

She shifted, feeling the hard bite of the wooden chair beneath her legs. The ebony scarf kept her blind. The scarlet one kept her wrists immobile. Naked, but not necessarily helpless, she waited for Julio Alberto to speak and proceed with whatever devilry he had planned.

Maybe I finally made him angry enough to end me? It wouldn’t surprise me. Then he could find someone more docile and eager to please. Not a nasty tempered bitch like myself.

Josephine sensed him circling her. Occasionally he’d reach out and touch her hair, mouth, thighs, and the part of her he owned between those open thighs.

“I tell you this is getting aggravating, Josephine. All these years later and you still carry these crazy thoughts around in your head, querida.”

“I can’t help it.”

“Yes, you can. You just choose not to at the moment because it’s easier.”

“It’s not—”

“Hush. Why do you think you’re still here?”

“I don’t know.”

He slapped her sex. “Don’t be tiresome, querida. Remember who you are talking to. We have some variation of this conversation every year on this night. I could set my watch by it. While I am a patient man, even this could wear down a saint’s soul. Let’s try a bit a variety this time. Let’s go for the complete truth, my little kitty.”

Josephine bit back a feral moan. “Tell me what you want me to say, Julio Alberto.”

“Always quick to play the whore, eh?”

She felt him crouch before her. She lifted her head high. “I’m not playing. It’s who I am, baby.”

 

“Liar. You’re no more whore than I am. You never were a true whore, Josephine, no matter how much you want to think otherwise.” Julio Alberto cupped her knees. “You know what I want from you.”

Regan insisted on walking Jessie to her hotel room door. When they arrived, she pulled her key card out of her pocket and turned to him. “Thank you for dinner. And don’t forget, our first interview tomorrow is—”

She never finished the sentence. Regan’s lips came down to meet hers in a crushing kiss that stole the words from her mouth and shocked Jessie to her toes.

Her eyebrows reached her hairline. What the hell was he doing?

Regan’s lips eased back slightly and the pressure of his mouth suddenly changed. His lips became soft but hotly insistent, working on her mouth in the most interesting way. Pressing, releasing, sliding, coaxing. Jessie’s brain frantically tried to catch up with what was going on.

Dear God, Regan Quade is kissing me!

Obviously taking her stunned paralysis as acceptance, his tongue urged her lips to open for him. And damn it, Jessie’s did. Their tongues met, tangled, twined. Her mouth was on fire from the heat of his velvety stroking. A low moan escaped from Regan’s throat and he pressed her back against the hotel room door, easing his thigh between her legs.

Jessie inhaled sharply, but her body seemed to know exactly how it wanted to respond. Her nipples hardened. The pressure of Regan’s muscular thigh against her groin made her legs go weak and her body crave his in the most elemental way.

He broke away from her lips to trail a path of rough kisses down the side of her throat. “You smell delicious. What are you wearing?”

I have to get out of here. She spun and found him right there, blocking her retreat. When had he pressed so near? Why was he standing with only a hair’s breadth of space between their bodies, so close that if she took a deep breath her breasts would graze his chest?

She tilted her head, aiming to put at least a few inches between them. Faint laughter lines framed his ice-blue eyes, together with long dark lashes that should have looked feminine but somehow didn’t. He was older than she’d thought. Definitely late thirties, perhaps even chasing forty, but the age lines coupled with those chiselled cheekbones only added to his masculine allure.

His scent surrounded her, heady and virile, laced with a trace of aftershave, and she couldn’t help it. She inhaled—deeply—knowing the movement would lift her eager nipples up and forward, and straight into his chest.

“Eve.” That one word, delivered in such a gravelly tone, spoke volumes. When he leaned in, cementing their physical connection, she sucked in a breath.

“Yes?” Her query came out as a squeak. Rasa’s voice screamed inside her head. “Ky is the one.” His heart pounded like an urgent tattoo against her breasts, vibrating in tandem with her own rapid pulse rate.

“I don’t know what it is about you.” The words quivered across her skin, his breath warm and sweet-smelling. “I’ve just bought your ancestral home, and clearly you wanted it as much—maybe more—than I. My head is telling me to steer clear of you. Give you space. But I can’t. It’s like…I dunno. Can’t explain…” He reached up and shifted a lock of hair away from her face, stroking her cheek gently in the process.

And I should run like hell. Instead she leaned in to the touch. “I don’t want to feel this.” Let him in. “Not today. Not here.” She was drowning in the depths of those amazing eyes. And yet, how could he be the one? What did that even mean, anyway? How could anyone know who was right for another person—before that couple had even met? It was bullshit. Must be.

“I…” She cleared her throat and tried again. “I didn’t want this place, Ky. I needed it. You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it to me.”

“I can’t.” Their whole bodies were touching now, the full length of him pressing her back into the edge of the bench. The flesh between his legs was rigid, and hot, and surged into her abdomen with an insistence that would not be ignored. “I want to dislike you.”

His hands were running up and down her sides, the touch sending more shivers along her nerve endings. “Do you?”

His mouth hovered only an inch from hers and she closed her eyes to block out reality. For a few minutes I can escape into this. Away from thought. Into sensation. “No,” she whispered. “I don’t.”

“You did?”

Her shy laughter eased some of the tension between them. “No, I don’t think so. I’ve never done it before. It usually takes a while….”

“I’m all for taking our time,” he said, reaching for the waistband of his jeans and hauling them up over his hips. “Since we’ve taken the edge off, want to try it slow?”

She seemed surprised he hadn’t had enough, but he was more than a little worried that there wasn’t any such thing where Shannon was concerned. The way she’d come on his first thrust had nearly undone him. No one had ever wanted him so bad before that they’d come at just having him inside.

“We’ll use the bed this time,” he coaxed. He stroked her hair from the crown of her head down to her jaw. “I’m not through with you, Shannon. I want to taste every inch of your body. I want to find every place that makes you moan and every spot that turns you to putty. I want to make you so hot you’ll come on first penetration again.”

Indecision filled her eyes, but only for a second before she smiled up at him. “Okay. But only if I get to find all your secret soft spots, too.”

They took turns in the bathroom. He went first to dispose of the condom. While he waited for her, he moved the rest of the condoms to the bedside table then undressed before sitting on the edge of the bed. When she stepped out, he stood.

Ava watched as Mitch departed, half-relieved and half-regretful. She was so in over her head. When he’d kissed her, she’d just about lost it.

She had no idea it could be like that. The very best sex she’d ever had with her last boyfriend couldn’t even compare to the kiss she’d just experienced. And that was just a kiss! She’d been so flustered, she wasn’t even sure what she’d said. Apparently she’d said something about emailing him?

Just then, her phone rang. Pulling her cell phone out of her pocket, she saw that it was Jessica, probably calling to check in on her. If she ignored it, Jessica might take her earlier message seriously and send the cops over. But she was in no state of mind to have a conversation with Jess right now.

Having no choice, she answered the call. “Hey, Jess, I’m fine, everything is just fine, I’m about to head home, and everything is fine.”

There was a long pause before Jessica responded. “Oh my god, you slept with him didn’t you?”

“What?! No!”

“Something happened, I can hear it in your voice. Oh, this is just fabulous! Tell me everything. Is he there right now?”

“He went to the bedroom,” Ava stammered.

There was a loud squeal, and Ava had to pull the phone from her ear. “No, it’s not like that,” she insisted.

“Well, then tell me. What is it like? Is he hot? Did you guys kiss? Make out? Get to third base?”

Ava glanced nervously toward the bedroom, worried Mitch would come out and overhear them. She whispered quickly into the phone, “He’s totally gorgeous, way out of my league, and yes we kissed, but then he stopped, and I’m glad he did because I have no idea what I’m doing and I’m freaking out. It was very exciting and all, but I’m getting the hell out of here before anything else happens.”

Jessica was silent again, this time for so long that Ava checked her phone display to see if she’d lost the connection. Finally, she heard her friend’s voice.

“And then what?”

“What do you mean?” Ava asked, genuinely confused.

“After you run away with your tail between your legs, what then?”

“Then… nothing. I don’t know. He doesn’t seem like the relationship type, so I doubt I’ll see him again after tonight.”

“How would you know? You barely know him.”

“Exactly,” Ava agreed, glad that Jessica could see if from her point of view.

Jessica sighed. “What I meant is that you’re running away again. You aren’t even giving this guy a chance.”

Ava was about to interrupt, but Jessica wouldn’t let her.

“No, listen to me. The way I see it you have three options. One, you can run away like you always do and regret it for the rest of your life. Two, you can get this guy’s number and then actually call him. And you can’t chicken out, Ava. You have to actually call him and set up another date and get to know the guy. And then, when you finally get comfortable with him, you guys can have wild monkey sex.”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake… what’s my third option?”

“Glad you asked,” Jessica said, and Ava could hear the smile in her voice as she responded. “The third option is a lot like the second option, except you skip directly to the end part.”

“What, just sleep with him?”

“No, have wild monkey sex with him.”

“That’s insane.”

“No, it’s not,” Jessica insisted. “It can be incredibly liberating, not to mention satisfying. You deserve to let your hair down and go a little wild for once in your life. And it’s not like you’re being totally stupid, I know you’re on the pill, and use a condom, of course. But really, it’s just sex. What do you have to lose?”

Just then, Mitch came back into the living room, still shirtless, carrying a small, white card. The lamplight seemed to glow on his dark skin, and emphasized the sharp features of his face with shadows, reminding her again of a predator stalking its prey.

For a moment, she imagined surrendering herself to him, submitting to his overwhelming masculinity. She wanted to feel deliciously feminine and awash with passion like she had just a few minutes ago, but this time, she didn’t want to zone out. She wanted to enjoy every second of it, to roll around in the tangible sensations like a cat.

“Ava, are you still there?”

“I gotta go,” Ava answered, her voice husky.

“He’s back, isn’t he? Go for door number three! Wild monkey sex!”

“Yeah,” Ava answered back before disconnecting the call, unsure if she was placating her or agreeing with her.

“Everything all right?” Mitch asked.

She nodded. “That was my friend, Jessica, checking in on me.”

“Making sure I hadn’t eaten you up like a big, bad wolf?”

He smiled at her as he said it, and Ava couldn’t help but think that it might not be such a bad thing to be devoured by him. Just then, the antique bracket clock near the front door struck midnight. The sound of its chimes was soft but deep, resonating richly.

With sudden clarity, Ava realized that this was the moment the fortune teller had warned her about. The “choice” she predicted that she’d be faced with “on a beach at midnight” hadn’t been about getting naked on the beach earlier, it was whether or not to stay, now.

“Ah.” Britney cocked her head, finally making the connection. “I think Grandma mentioned you in some of her letters. I take it you’re the nutcase with the adorable puppy? The one who needs a haircut and a decent pair of jeans?” Not that she saw anything wrong with the ones he was currently wearing. They showed off his slim hips and nicely shaped ass quite effectively.

The voice in her head snorted in derision

Jacob rolled his eyes, a wry smile curving the edge of his lips.  “That would be me. Your Grandmother was quite the independent spirit. I don’t think she ever approved of me.”

Britney forced a laugh. Did he really not remember her? “Oh you’re in good company. There weren’t very many people she approved of, but in her own way she was loveable. She liked to project the image of a grumpy old lady but she was really very sweet.”

He didn’t look convinced. “I’ll have to take your word for that.” His gaze lingered on her just a smidge longer than was polite. “You look familiar. Have we met before?”

Oh shit. Now what? Lying was never a good idea, lead to all sorts of things. In her case it usually led to getting caught.

“I doubt it. I haven’t been around much since I left school. Grandma and I mostly kept in contact by email and phone.” The lie slid out so smoothly she could almost believe it herself.

He shrugged, although a slight frown marred the perfection of his forehead. “It must be something else. Well, we’ve met now. Welcome to the neighborhood.” He looked down at Winston. “And who do we have here? Maybe Trixie had a reason for running away this time. He looks like quite the gentleman.”

Britney groaned. The guy needed to do something annoying. Anything. She did not like the way her heart melted with every sentence out of his lips. Mind reading better not be one of Jacob’s talents, or she might as well leave town now.

“This is Winston. He and I are somewhat new to each other, but I have to agree he’s definitely a gentleman.” There. That was almost a conversational tone of voice.

“Jacob held his hand out, palm up, and Winston sniffed it graciously before ruining the whole gentleman thing by slurping the fingers enthusiastically.

The look of shock on Jacob’s face was just too much.

Britney burst out laughing. She couldn’t help it. Finally! A less than perfect reaction. At the sound, Trixie jumped up and down, wagging her tail and yapping excitedly, and Winston let out a dignified woof, just to add to the confusion.

“I think he likes me.” Jacob wiped his hand off on his jeans, his mouth twisted in a wry grin. “Or maybe he just wanted a quick taste in case you plan on siccing him on me later.”

Britney smothered another peal of laugher, while Winston gave her a pained look. Apparently he saw nothing funny in his gesture of friendship. She patted him on the head. “It’s okay buddy. We can work on your manners this summer.”

He looked up at her with a serious expression and thumped his tail on the ground a few times. Apparently he was fine with that.

“Hate to introduce myself and run, but Trixie and I need to get back now. Welcome to the Cape. I’ll try to keep my little brat off your property from now on. When you get settled, maybe we can get together for a cup of coffee?”

Was he asking for a date? No. A cup of coffee between neighbors was just that. And she didn’t want to date right now anyway. Did she? No! Still, a cup of coffee couldn’t hurt anything. Even a cup of coffee with a gorgeous hunk of man that she’d slept with years ago. “Sure. Sounds lovely.”

He smiled then, and it went all the way from his eyes to the tips of his scuffed up running shoes. Britney’s heart did a little flip.

Coffee might not be such a safe idea after all!
