Daron

All the blood drained from my head, pooling in some sorry puddle near my feet. “That means…” I shook my head refusing to believe it.

Selena planted her hands on her hips. “Exactly.” Her tone rose with a twinge of panic, similar to what was swelling through my chest.

“It can’t be possible.”

Selena sighed with dread. “I wish it wasn’t.”

“Are you saying—” I couldn’t finish the sentence.

“I’m not saying anything. Unfortunately, I know it’s true.”

I rubbed my eyes. “How—how did it happen?”

She shrugged and threw her hands out to her sides. “I don’t know.”

My pulse shot up and breath came quicker. “You had to have done something.” I pointed at her. On hearing how loud and accusatory my voice rose, I lowered it so as not to draw attention from humans in the apartment building as we strolled by. “Maybe something powerful happened and all your succubus mojo went haywire.”

Her lips curled with revulsion. “Check your ego and your accusations, incubus. You were good, but not that good that I’d want to make us permanent.”

“Permanent,” I repeated. My heart beat so loudly, it sounded like an echo in my brain. I shook my head from side to side as if dragging it through sludge. “It can’t… we can’t.”

A startled tuxedo cat darted out from behind some trash bins on the side of a building and dashed across the road, disappearing in the shadows.

“You think I want this?” She snarled and motioned between us.

“I’m guessing no.”

“Of course not. Eww. In case you didn’t realize, there were two sex demons doing the horizontal tango. Since I know I didn’t cast any ‘spell,’” she paused while circling her hand, “you must be the one to blame.” She pointed dead at my chest.

I huffed. “I certainly didn’t generate any freaking magic that would set this kind of bond between us.” I groaned. My skin turned so hot, a fine sheen of sweat coated me. “It’s a trap. I don’t want to be captured.”

“Captured,” she repeated at a higher pitch. Under the glow of the streetlight, the look of horror that passed over her features appeared rang clear. “If we didn’t do this, how did it happen?”

“I don’t know.” This couldn’t be real. I crossed my arms, released them, and then steepled my fingers to my mouth. The universe must be playing some sort of sick joke on us.

My heart sank. I leaned against the brick wall and sagged. It wasn’t true. Because what I felt between us was deeper than I wanted to admit. I closed my eyes, trying to blink the truth away. It didn’t work. I reopened them and tried to control my quickened breaths. The realization was far too potent.

Scary. Terrifying. And holy-terror-of-terrors real.

“You know what this means?” Her expression mirrored my dread as if we simultaneously released an internal scream.

I dropped my hands to my sides and summoned the courage to state the horror. “We’re bonded?”

“How dare you speak of me like that?”

Lucan stopped and turned at the sound of Veronique’s furious accusation. She strode out of the forest, eyed red-rimmed and burning with fury.

His pulse quickened. What had she heard?

“Veronique, what are you doing here?” He spoke in the calmest voice he could muster.

Danton and Mattias mumbled in low tones behind Lucan. Mattias muttered something like, Looks like somebody’s in trouble.

She strode toward Lucan with quick steps that made the fabric of her dark emerald dress rustle. “You think this was all a joke?” She waved her hand in a circular motion. “Some fun and games until you got tired and decided to go in search of a new toy?”

“No, of course not.” He opened his arms wide, turning his palms up.

“What now—you’re bragging to your brothers of your latest conquest?” She spat.

“Before you go off to find a new one.”

“You misunderstand,” Lucan attempted to placate her.
“Come now, Veronique, and let’s talk.” That was another problem. What could he say that he hadn’t said several times already?

“I’ve heard enough of your words. Lies.” She pointed at his chest.

“It’s not like that at all,” Danton added from behind Lucan.

“Back off!” She snapped at Danton. She turned back to Lucan and curled her fingers in. “I can silence your lies.”

“Hold up,” Mattias countered with a raise of his hand.

Gray smoke funneled from her fingers, followed by fiery sparks. It quickly swelled and swirled out like a charcoal tornado etched with streaks of fire. She hurled the growing mass at Lucan before he could even protest or try to block the magic.

Mattias turned his attention back to the bar to order another drink. A woman sitting a few stools down caught his attention. Her dark hair fell in loose waves hiding half of her pale face, but it didn’t hide her worried expression. She twisted the cocktail napkin with trembling hands.

What distressed her?

She appeared to be alone. Wearing all black from head-to-toe was common in this club, but he sensed she had a different intention. While those who shimmied seductively out on the dance floor strove to be noticed, she pulled her black wrap around her as if she wanted to be cloaked. A worry line furrowed between her brows as she searched the club.

A guy with spiky black hair and goth makeup stepped beside her. By his swagger, Mattias sensed the man would hit on her within the next ten seconds.

It took four.

The man leaned close to her ear and said something. With a wide smile, he appeared confident that whatever he said was clever.

Mattias growled.

Odd. How many times had he witnessed a similar scenario? He shouldn’t have had that possessive response.

“What are you staring at?” Lucan asked.

“Just the usual entertainment. Boy meets girl. Girl flirts or shoots him down. Boy walks away with girl or defeated and alone. I’m hoping this one strikes out.”

The way the woman squirmed aided his case. She responded without much enthusiasm in her expression and looked away. The guy didn’t seem to read her lack of interest.

“My betting days are over,” Lucan said. “Now that we are free, it’s time to pay more interest in our own affairs rather than others.”

“True,” Mattias agreed.

Yet, less than ten seconds passed before he dragged his gaze back to her. The guy was gone. Too bad. Mattias missed the moment when she’d shot him down.

What was wrong with him? Why did he care about that fate of a yet another potential hook up at this club? It meant nothing to him. She meant nothing to him.

“I’ll be right back,” he told his brothers.

He approached the woman. What the hell are you doing? he asked himself.

He ignored his internal voice and continued to walk over.

What the hell are you doing? He repeated.

My duty, he snapped back. I need to make sure she’s all right.

Great, now he was arguing with himself over a complete stranger.

Despite the potent scents of alcohol and perspiration, her subtle fragrance wafted to him. He inhaled it more deeply. A tantalizing swirl of vanilla and nutmeg and wildflowers suffused his brain, triggering a torrent of desire. He stifled a moan of pleasure.

This might have been a bad idea.

He closed his eyes and continued his internal debate. Should he proceed?
